The Magick & Madness Behind Moldavite

Anyone - spiritually inclined, dormant or otherwise - can easily recognise that there is something particularly special about moldavite. Its glowing green exterior can only be described as extra terrestrial, and when in the hands of a human, has been known to potentially cause life altering effects.

The rock is theorised to have formed almost 15 million years ago by the impact of a meteorite hitting Earth in southern Germany. And for this reason it’s not classed as a crystal, but instead a tektite.

The Hype

With such a strange and mysterious creation, the powers of moldavite are often speculated and tested, most recently through the forum of Tik Tok. Last year in October the moldavite trend surfaced off of the back of the rise in baby witch trends. Tik Tok has quickly become home to a thriving community of what they call “baby witches”, individuals who are new to the world of witchcraft.

The trend involved people buying moldavite with the intention of giving an update to their viewers in the coming days or weeks. It sounds all very light-hearted, very sweet, but little did they know. The trend quickly turned sour, with videos showing people crying into the camera about how their lives had dramatically changed.

The way that moldavite is said to work is that it removes obstacles from your life that stand in the way of you and the path you are supposed to be on. This process can be incredibly difficult and painful, and that’s why the timing of your moldavite journey is considered important. If you’re not able to handle big life shifts right now, then you won’t be able to handle the spiritual awakening that comes with carrying moldavite.

The Results

This came as no stranger to Tik Tok user Madeline Brooke. After buying a moldavite ring, Brooke was almost instantaneously “dumped by the man [she] thought [she] was going to marry”. However, she mentioned that she was now in a “10 times better” relationship, and believes that the moldavite was removing people from her life to make room for the people who were “supposed to be there”.

The 23 year old Colorado native also claimed that she experienced a “ginormous realisation” that the university she was attending wasn’t right for her. And although the move had initially cost her a “ton of friends”, she was able to attend her dream university and land herself an internship. Almost like magic, her life improved in every way she needed.

But it doesn’t all result in happiness, and owning moldavite means being prepared for the worst. Some people have reported suffering miscarriages after obtaining it, theorising that they weren’t ready to have one and blaming the powers of the moldavite as to why it happened.

Spotting Fakes

At this point, you'll be in one of two minds: absolutely no or where can I get this? If you’re thinking the latter, then be wary of fakes. The growing hype behind moldavite has become a hot-spot for scammers, who have been found selling the tektite for a suspiciously cheap price.

Usually a gram costs around £15, but can sometimes go up to £30 depending on the quality or grade. It’s expensive due to its limited supply of 275 tons. It sounds like a lot, but when compared to the 200 tonnes of clear quartz mined each year, it really puts into perspective just how precious moldavite is.

It’s best to order from reputable and trustworthy sites. Seek out for positive reviews, professionalism, and for long-standing businesses. Here are other ways you can avoid fakes:

  • Shape: If it is even in a nameable shape i.e. circular then I would avoid, aim for something that looks raw and from the earth. However, if you are getting moldavite jewellery, this doesn’t necessarily apply as these are often shaped to fit.

  • Finish: Moldavite has an almost scaly or wrinkly look to it, it is not smooth and polished, but instead bubby. It is also matte, not shiny or wet looking.

  • Colour: Don’t fall for variations such as “white moldavite or “African moldavite”. These are likely nothing more than sea glass and calcite.

  • Feeling: This isn’t always applicable but if you can hold the moldavite before purchasing, that would give you a good sense of its authenticity too. The tektite has such a high vibration, that your intuition should be able to tell you if what you’re holding is the real deal or not.

  • Timing: If it’s a struggle to get hold of, then it may not be the time. Listen to your instincts and have faith that when (and if) you’re supposed to have it, it will come to you.

Whether it’s alien powers or placebo, the mystery, magic and madness that comes with the molda-hype is sure to last. That is, until it runs out.
